THE SEASON, BACK THEN
The air of that season
A summer morning beside the river
Early summer in Shanghai: moisture on the window, a bicycle bell below, warm air carrying the smell of breakfast.
02 / FROM YOUR YEAR & THE TWO YEARS BEFORE
A world already becoming.
The web begins to find a common language
The World Wide Web Consortium was founded in 1994. A new way to connect people was taking shape, while most everyday life still happened away from a screen.
A new kind of story reaches the cinema
Later in 1995, Toy Story became the first fully computer-animated feature film. A familiar world of toys opened a new chapter in filmmaking.

From that world, to you.

Before you knew the river’s name
Before you knew the river’s name, the city was already moving beside it. A bicycle bell rang below a window. Someone unfolded a newspaper; someone else counted change for breakfast. It was June, and the world was busy being ordinary.
New things were arriving, too. The web was beginning to find a shared language. Later that year, a room full of toys would teach cinema a new way to tell a story. People were making small doors into futures they could not yet see.
And then you arrived, Alex. There was no headline for it on that folded newspaper. But somewhere in this vast, unfinished world, the meaning of the day changed completely.
You did not have to understand the year, or the city, or how far the river would take you. You only had to begin. The rest of the story would learn your name.
